 Media Literacy and Media Education Summer School

 

This six day summer school is taught by experts in media literacy at the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media.

 

The Centre is one of the leading international centres of research and practice in the field, and is based at the University of Institute of Education, located in London’s historic Bloomsbury district.

 

This course is for you if you are

 

• a youth media practitioner

• a media teacher or educator

• a media producer making content for young people

• an IT or ICT coordinator or teacher

• a film educator

• or have an interest in media and education policy

 

 

Offering critical perspectives on global media education and media literacy, with

particular emphasis on learning about media in formal and informal contexts, this

course includes:

 

• preparatory reading of key texts and online debates

• presentations of critical theories and key debates around media education and media literacy in a global context

• practical production experience – making computer games and digital video

• analysis of policy contexts and current trends in the UK and internationally

• presentations on new cutting-edge research and its relationship to learning and teaching about the media

 

The face to face element of the course runs over six days from Monday 6th

July to Saturday 11th July 2009. It will be assessed by: presentations during

the summer school; production activities such as making a blog and critical reflection on this; a critical essay following the course.

 

This Summer School leads to a Postgraduate Certificate in Media

Education. The credits can also be used towards our MA programme, and will give

you a third of the MA. Following registration via the Institute of Education's usual processes, other modules of the MA can be completed via distance learning.

 

The course tutors include Dr Shakuntala Banaji (Reading 'Bollywood': The Young

Audience and Hindi Films), Professor David Buckingham (Media Education: Literacy,

Learning and Contemporary Culture), and Dr Andrew Burn (Media Literacy in

Schools: Practice, Production, Progression)
