Cultural Identities

In a globalised media environment, the media play a complex role in the creation of cultural identities. The Centre has participated in several international research projects exploring the production and reception of global media for children. We have also co-ordinated and participated in pan-European projects where issues of cultural identity are inevitably central issues for investigation. We are also particularly interested in the potential of media production by children as a means of intercultural communication and exchange, and we have participated in a number of projects on this theme. Our student body is international and multicultural, and several research student projects focus on the questions of cultural identity that arise in children’s and young people’s use and appropriation of media. Cultural identity is also a key theme in our MA teaching, not least in relation to courses on research methodology.
