Amid all the hype about new media, it is easy to forget that ‘old’ media – television, film, radio and print media – still occupy a central place in children’s lives. Staff of the Centre have a long track record of research in this area, dating back over 20 years; and we continue to be interested in key questions about the economic, technological and textual characteristics of these media, as well as how children use and interpret them. We have conducted numerous major research projects on these issues, and supervise several research students focusing on areas such as television, popular literature and popular music. We also teach specialist modules on children’s media, youth culture and film on the MA in Media, Culture and Communication.
