Media Education

How can we enable children to deal with the increasingly media-saturated environment in which they live?

Media education – education about the media – is increasingly seen as a crucial entitlement for all young people. There is a long history of media teaching in the UK, dating back to the 1930s; and it is now a growing movement in many countries around the world. The Centre has conducted numerous research projects and consultancy activities in this field; and it has many full- and part-time doctoral students undertaking classroom-focused research. We also participate in the MA in Media, Culture and Communication, which has a large cohort of practising teachers. Our major interests in this field include: the nature of students’ learning about the media; children’s involvement in media production; and the potential of new media.
