New Media

There is a considerable amount of rhetoric about the impact of new media on children’s lives, and about their potential for education. While we share some of the enthusiasm and sense of possibility here, we believe it is important to evaluate such claims critically, and in the light of empirical evidence. The Centre has conducted numerous research and development projects looking at children’s uses of the internet, computer games and mobile technologies; and we have several research students working in this area. We also teach courses on the practical applications of new media in the MA in Media, Culture and Communication. We are particularly interested in the social uses of new media; questions of gender and cultural identity; the use of digital media for production; and the development of critical educational strategies.
